Flagstaff’s National Weather Service confirmed on Sunday that a twister had touched down east of Payson in Star Valley. A NWS team assessed the damages and concluded that an EF-1 was responsible for the incident. The NWS says that the winds reached speeds between 95 and 105 miles per hours. According to National Weather Service Flagstaff, approximately 20 houses have suffered some roof/window damage. No injuries have been reported, but the tornado knocked trees down in the vicinity.
Star Valley Mayor Bobby Davis said, “The damage is like an oncoming freight train. It was tremendous.” We’re so lucky that nobody was injured. We’re grateful for the many volunteers who helped us.
Robert Brier, a Star Valley resident said that the tornado he experienced on Sunday was one of his most terrifying experiences. Everyone screamed “microburst”. Brier said it was hard to believe that the storm is a tornado, because Arizona does not get many tornadoes.
I walked into my living-room and we were all hit. The whole house shook. My back door flew open. It was no longer there. Ada Herrington, a Star Valley resident said: “I stepped outside and there it was. In the moment I was very scared. “I was going to hide in the bathtub.”
Arizona’s family viewers sent in photos of damage done to homes and properties. In one video, debris is seen circling and what looks like a tornado.
