Fire officials reported that a firefighter who fell through the roof and into the burning building up to his elbows was taken to hospital. However, he was likely to recover from minor injuries.

Kingsway Motors was destroyed by fire. The majority of damage occurred in its repair workshop, located at the corner of King’s Highway East, and Brentwood Avenue.

At the scene, Assistant Chief Roger Caisse announced that the Fire Marshal’s Office would investigate the origin and cause of the blaze. The fire was first reported at around 2 pm on Monday.

He said that initially only two firefighters were able to respond because the third was helping with an emergency medical call for a patient going to hospital.

Caisse stated that “understaffed they tried to contain the fire using what they had.”

He said that even though crews had more manpower and two tower ladders at their disposal, they still struggled to bring the fires under control.

Caisse stated that “we gave 10-20 minutes offensive attack.” We were dumping 3,000 gallons per minute on the fire.

He said, “We finally got the roof opened and had enough water to put out most of the flames.”

Caisse stated that the injured firefighter fell down to his elbows while he was working on a ladder crew venting a roof.

The assistant chief stated that the firefighter was rescued by the crew immediately. He added that the treatment and release of the firefighter is expected to take place on Monday.

Caisse reported that the King’s Highway East was closed due to an emergency, but would be reopened by 5 pm.

He said that the building would be shut down for a long time, adding that fire officials had been in contact with business owners.

Caise stated that “the roof has lost most of its structure and structural cracks have begun to appear on the outside.” We’re concerned with the structural integrity of the structure.
