The roof of an Grade I-listed castle is in need of repair.
Colchester Castle has been added to Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register due to drainage issues on its roof.
Colchester City Council is responsible for the monument that dates back to 1076. It is deemed at immediate risk.
Pippa pickles, the castle manager said that tourists could still visit because there were no dangers.
Historic England approved the plans for remodeling the “inadequate drainage system”, which was “overwhelmed by persistent rain in the recent months,” said a museum spokesperson.
Historic England advisors said earlier this year that work would be needed to reverse the deteriorating condition of some areas of the building.
In the 1930s, the roof of the castle was installed and large puddles are now forming in all the flat areas.
The museum has said that fencing was installed to safeguard the exterior walls while the sections at risk begin to stabilize.
The tower of London was designed after the castle, which was used as a royal fortress during the Middle Ages.
Michelle Burrows of Colchester City Council stated: “Colchester Castle is built on the foundations of Claudius’ Roman Temple and today it is a popular tourist attraction and modern museum.
We are applying for additional funding because, like all historical buildings, we need to maintain the building.
