Andrea Dean was asleep at her home in Old Greenwich on Monday when the hours of wind and rain finally took their toll.

“Everything was fine until four or five o’clock this morning. It got really really, really windy,” she said. “I kept hearing acorns falling on the roof, and then all of a sudden, I hear a loud boom.”

A branch from the pine tree outside had broken off, busted through the roof and into her bedroom.

“It startled me and woke me up. I turned on my lamp and I saw the tree through the roof,” she said. “I quickly ran downstairs and told my husband, ‘Honey, a tree fell through the roof. It’s in our bedroom right now.’”

The branch did not come through far enough to hit her, but Dean said it was scary nonetheless. Despite the crash, she maintained a positive attitude about the situation.

“It was an interesting way to be woken up,” she said.

She said she was unsure what would happen next. When reached by phone in the morning, she was waiting for the building inspector to come by and hoped that the branch would be removed and a tarp would be placed over the hole later in the day.

Dean was one of many Connecticut residents that woke up to the ill aftermath of the storm on Monday. Tens of thousands of people lost power as inches of rain poured and wind speeds reached 60 mph.

Greenwich Police detailed more than 20 road closures and detours as of 10 a.m. on Monday and Greenwich Public Schools pushed back the start of class.

“Due to potentially hazardous road conditions, GPS will operate on a two-hour delay,” the district posted on X. “Be safe.”

Police said there were 11 Eversource crews working on restoring power around town.

974 Eversource customers in Greenwich were without power at 11:03 a.m., according to Eversource’s online outage map, or about 3.4 percent of customers in town. By 2 p.m., it had dropped to about 915 customers.
