The residents of the Puertosol urbanization (Malaga) patrol the streets due to the insecurity caused by the constant robberies in the area.
The residents of the Puertosol urbanization, in the city of Malaga, have been suffering constant robberies in their homes for months. Fed up with insecurity, they have begun to organize themselves into citizen patrols to defend themselves against thieves.
Every afternoon, around 7:30 p.m., about six or seven people gather in front of the neighborhood church to organize the day’s work. They place their cars at strategic points and, armed with flashlights, thermal cameras and the company of some dogs, they observe the movement of the criminals.
The president of the owners of the urbanization, Maria Angeles Fernandez, explained to EFE that the residents have decided to mount this operation due to the lack of response from the police. “We have had five robberies. “They loot the entire house,” this neighbor denounces on COPE radio. “They have come to enter plots with people inside. They have recorded it with their cameras,” he adds.
Fernandez told EFE that his neighborhood is facing “a wave of robberies” that began in January, in which thieves arrive and “stay a few days” in the area, to loot as much as possible. The urbanization has eight robberies in the last month.
The participants in the citizen patrols rotate, although they have a fixed group of six or seven people to carry out the task. “And then there are the neighbors and the elderly. We accompany you, we go through the surrounding streets. We have less risk,” Fernandez explained on the radio.
In addition, the urbanization has the services of a security guard, who works until six in the morning. But it has no authority to make arrests and is limited to taking license plates.
The Malaga City Council acts in the face of insecurity
Given the wave of assaults on the houses of Puertosol, the Malaga City Council has requested a meeting with the Subdelegation of the central Government. The delegate councilor of the Puerto de la Torre District (in which the urbanization is located), Jacobo Florido, has demanded that the National Police Corps “extend security measures and provide more means so that the residents of this area of Puerto de la Torre can be safe.”
Florido recalled that the State Security Forces and Corps “are in charge of guaranteeing citizen security, preventing the commission of crimes and investigating them” and has insisted that “when there are already eight attempted robberies in a month, it is necessary “That the National Police take charge of the investigation, monitoring and protecting the residents of this urbanization.”
The president of the urbanization insists on the lack of police in the area and assures that, even if they contact her, they are not always available.
“When you call them, they say they are busy or they arrive between 20 and 30 minutes late, enough time for the thieves to flee,” another neighbor told EFE.
