This week, thousands of Baylor University Students will move into a new residence hall after $41.7 Million renovation.
Due to the renovations, which started in May 2022 at Ruth Collins, many students have been moved from this residence hall and into hotels across Interstate 35, as well as other dorms located on campus.
This building faces the rest campus and has been remodeled with a community room that includes a kitchen. It also features more windows. The entrance to the building has been redirected, from Eighth Street down Seventh Street. Tiffany Lowe of Baylor University’s campus living and education department said that the project involved new hardwood flooring and an updated electrical and plumbing system.
Lowe said Collins’ community has been around for a very long time and that students are drawn to the area. The students want to be there for the same reason their mothers, grandmothers, and sisters lived in Collins or heard of it. “I found it very exciting to preserve a part of history and also modernize it for the students of tomorrow.”
Collins, the dorm student nicknamed “Crusty Collins,” has undergone renovations over a period of time. Collins, a dorm for 466 female students moving in on Thursday can expect a modernized and clean environment.
Lowe explained that due to the renovations the previous capacity of 570 students was now 466. Re-sizing or converting bedrooms into community or laundry rooms can result in 10-15% loss in beds.
Baylor spokesperson Lori Fogleman said that the construction was finished earlier this month, after a 14-month period of work.
Cityside was named “Cityside” when Baylor secured Cityside for the first time in 2021, to house an unusually high freshman class. The contract was terminated in May.
Baylor renovated Alexander and Memorial Residence Halls (home to Honors Residential College) in May. The plan is to connect the two buildings through the Carona Family Commons.
Fogleman confirmed that Allen, Dawson, Kokernot, and Kokernot Residence Halls would be renovated in the summer of 2019. Fogleman says that following the renovations North and South Russells in 2014, Penlands in 2016 and Martins in 2017, all of Baylor’s older residential halls will once again be renovated.
Baylor is expecting more than 20.000 students to enroll in the fall. This includes 3,300 new freshmen. Moving in began on Wednesday.
Baylor’s students and faculty assist the incoming freshmen with their move into dorms. This event is a 21-year tradition.
Baylor’s Linda Livingstone, wearing a shirt and shorts with the slogan “Move2BU”, showed marks on her knees as evidence of her renovation.
The double knee surgery was done in June and she recovered in time to move into her new home.
Livingstone said she was feeling good and excited about the new school term.
Livingstone believes it is impossible for me to adequately express my gratitude to the surgeon who operated on me and to the physical therapist that helped. The knees of my legs feel fantastic. I’ve even climbed up to the fourth floors in some residence halls. Baylor has always been supportive and caring.
Thank you to everyone for your support this summer. “I’m doing well and cannot wait to get those boxes moved in.”
